Childhood Fever Treatment

An elevated body temperature is referred to as a fever. Typically, body temperature rises during the day from its lowest point in the morning. The body temperature varies from individual to person. Although the precise temperature of a fever is difficult to determine, most medical professionals concur that a fever is defined as a temperature of 100.4˚ Fahrenheit (F) or 38˚ Celsius (C) or higher. Fevers may indicate that the body is battling a bacterial or viral infection. It may also occur during vaccination, from overheating, or from an extremely severe sunburn. Often, the fever goes away on its own and doesn't need to be treated. Use a digital thermometer to measure the temperature. Utilize mercury thermometers sparingly.
The most accurate thermometers are rectal (in the lower abdomen) ones. If used properly, forehead (temporal artery) thermometers are the next best option. If used correctly, oral (mouth) and tympanic (ear) thermometers can be employed. Wait 30 minutes after consuming anything hot or cold to take oral temps. Wait fifteen minutes after coming in from the cold for the ear.
